Why We Say Twelve

South Florida has 12 pest seasons

Most of the country gets a winter that resets the pest population. South Florida does not. Here the calendar does not switch pests off — it just changes which one is driving the calls. That is the whole idea behind twelve seasons instead of four.

  1. 01

    January

    Rodents move in

Dry season. Outdoor food thins out and roof rats work their way into attics and soffits. Nothing outside is cold enough to reduce the population.

  2. 02

    February

    Termite flights begin

Asian subterranean termites start swarming — evening flights, usually drawn to exterior lights.

  3. 03

    March

    Swarms peak

Asian subterranean swarming hits its stride. Ghost ants and white-footed ants build up indoors looking for moisture.

  4. 04

    April

    Drywood season opens

Drywood termite swarms begin. Ants trail indoors hunting water while the dry season holds.

  5. 05

    May

    The rain switches on

Wet season starts around May 15. Formosan subterranean swarms begin and mosquito breeding restarts with the first standing water.

  6. 06

    June

    Mosquito season proper

Hurricane season opens June 1. Formosan swarms peak. Container water sits everywhere and mosquito numbers climb fast.

  7. 07

    July

    Roach compounding

Peak heat and humidity shorten roach breeding cycles. A small German roach problem becomes a large one inside a few weeks.

  8. 08

    August

    Wettest stretch

Mosquito and fly pressure at its highest. Flea and tick activity peaks in shaded, damp yards.

  9. 09

    September

    Storm displacement

Peak storm month. Flooding pushes rodents and roaches into structures and relocates disturbed ant colonies indoors.

  10. 10

    October

    Rain tapers, rodents shift

Wet season ends around October 15. Drywood swarming winds down and rodents start looking for winter shelter.

  11. 11

    November

    Seasonal properties reopen

Hurricane season closes November 30. Snowbird season begins and homes shut up for months get opened onto infestations nobody was watching.

  12. 12

    December

    Attic season

Cooler and drier. Rodent activity in attics is at its highest and roaches move into warm, moist interior voids.

The reasons behind it

There is no winter reset

Miami’s average January low sits around 63°F. Nothing here gets cold enough to knock a pest population back, so every generation carries straight into the next one instead of starting over each spring.

Half the year is the wet season

The South Florida wet season runs roughly May 15 to October 15, and Miami averages about 67 inches of rain a year with most of it falling in that window. Standing water is the single biggest driver of mosquito pressure, and a container mosquito needs about a bottle cap of it.

Termite swarms overlap almost continuously

Asian subterranean termites swarm roughly February through May. Formosan subterranean swarms run from late April into June. Drywood termites swarm during the day from May into the fall. Stacked together, that is near-continuous termite pressure from February through summer.

Two invasive termite species overlap only here

The Miami–Fort Lauderdale area is the only place in the continental United States where the ranges of the Asian and Formosan subterranean termite overlap. UF/IFAS researchers at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center have confirmed the two species interbreeding, producing established hybrid colonies.

Storm season moves pests indoors

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Flooding, roof damage and downed landscaping displace rodents and insects out of their harborage and into buildings, which is why call volume spikes after a storm rather than during it.

Climate figures from the National Weather Service. Termite flight timing and the Asian–Formosan overlap from University of Florida IFAS research.
